'Ugly Sweater Run' Set For Hartford Dec. 6

Bring out your ugliest Santa sweater for this holiday 5K race in Hartford

HARTFORD — Eager to ironically show off that knitted holiday sweater with Abominable Snowman stitched on the chest, but don't know where?

The Ugly Sweater Run, a casual 5K race at Bushnell Park on Saturday, Dec. 6, could be your chance.

Runners and walkers can feel free to loop tiny sleigh bells onto their sneakers (or elf shoes) for the 11 a.m. fun run produced by Human Movement Management. Hartford is one of nearly two dozen cities hosting the event, playfully dubbed "the ugliest 5K on the planet."

Organizers promise inflatable decorations along the 3.1-mile course, holiday tunes, plenty of hot chocolate stations and a choice of a beer or hard cider for registered adults who are 21 and over.

Some proceeds will go to Save the Children, a nonprofit that gives humanitarian aid to youth in the U.S. and abroad. Aside from the $35 registration fee — it's $30 if runners decline the alcoholic beverage or register in groups of 4 or more — people also have the option of donating at least $5 to the charity. Check-in starts at 10 a.m. the day of the race.

Carolyn Miles, president and CEO for the Fairfield-based Save the Children, said in a statement that the Ugly Sweater Run is meant to be a family-friendly affair.

That means children, strollers and pets dressed in faux reindeer antlers are welcome.

"Plus, working up a sweat will help burn up those sugar-cookie calories," Miles said. "A healthy bonus!"
