COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The injury to Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis' elbow is to the ulnar nerve — one of the three main nerves in the arm. Think of it this way; it's like banging your elbow into something with substantial force. It just hurts 100 times more.
Ulnar nerve entrapment occurs when the nerve in the arm becomes irritated, or in KML's case, compressed by trauma. The ulnar travels from the neck into the hand and can be compromised at any point along the way.
Depending upon where it occurs, this pressure on the nerve can cause numbness and/or pain in the elbow, wrist, hand or fingers. The most common place the nerve is compressed is behind the elbow, and when that happens it's called cubital tunnel syndrome.
It's the job of the Huskies' athletic trainer, Rosemary Ragle, to rehabilitate Mosqueda-Lewis, as well as Morgan Tuck (out four to six weeks after right knee surgery).
"God," is what KML called Ragle this week because of her reputation for excellence in the industry.
