#ThrowbackThursday: The Whalers Join The NHL
In Connecticut, there has been only one professional hockey team in the state's history: the Hartford Whalers. The team joined the NHL when the league expanded in June of 1979 and called Hartford home until relocating to North Carolina. The team created a history of memories, fans and Connecticut pride that stretched beyond the state's borders. With their final game played on April 13, 1997, here is a look back at Hartford Whaler hockey.

New England Whalers
January 1972 -- Jack Kelley, a successful coach at Boston University, joins the New England WHA franchise as coach and general manager. Newly formed team is named "Whalers" because it contains the letters of the new league, and it carries with it a part of the New England heritage.
