The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced its All-Connecticut high school football teams for 2017 on Tuesday, as well as the finalists for player and coach of the year.
Three area stars signing with FBS teams on Wednesday — East Hartford’s LB/RB Kevon Jones, E.O. Smith-Storrs lineman Rondell Bothroyd and Xavier-Middletown QB Will Levis — were all named to the first team. Jones is headed to UConn, Bothroyd to Wake Forest and Levis to Penn State.
Also named to the first team were Hand-Madison LB Brian Casagrande, Bristol Central DB Dathan Hickey and South Windsor DL Hassan Azeem. The teams were selected by a committee of 10 high school coaches from around the state.
The three finalists for player of the year honors are Casagrande, Ansonia RB Markell Dobbs and Killingly RB Spencer Lockwood. The coach of the year finalists are John Marinelli (Greenwich), David Mastroianni (Hand) and Chad Neal (Killingly). The winners will be announced at Camp’s annual high school “Breakfast of Champions.”
In addition, the All-Connecticut team members and the four state champions — Darien (LL), Hand (L), Killingly (M) and St. Joseph (S) — will also be honored at the breakfast on Jan. 13 at 8:30 a.m. at The Omni Hotel in New Haven.
