Former UConn swingman Rashad Anderson possessed an unorthodox yet deadly shooting stroke, loading the basketball high above his head before launching it with very little spin and even less fear.
He might have been the best pure shooter Mike Anthony covered as the Courant’s beat reporter in that era. Or maybe it was A.J. Price. In any event, Anthony now has a front-row seat for a new group of Husky snipers that, like their male counterparts, answer to a harsh critic on the sidelines.
“Someone once asked Rashad what his favorite moment was,” Anthony recalled on the latest episode of the UConn Insider podcast, which focused mainly on his new beat. “He was coming off the floor [after a particularly efficient shooting performance] and Jim Calhoun put his arm around him and said, ‘you think you’re hot s---, don’t you?’”
Anthony discusses coach Geno Auriemma’s fiery press conferences of late (1:30), the performance against Tulsa by the Husky reserves that drew his ire (5:00), Megan Walker’s emergence (14:00), the hard-fought win over Texas (16:30), Kia Nurse’s lightning-quick release (20:30), the best shooters he saw on the men’s beat (22:45) and the key to writing a compelling game story when the outcome is so rarely in doubt (24:50).
Then, Anthony wraps things up with stories from another ill-fated road trip (29:00)
