Galen Rupp, the bronze medalist in the marathon at the Rio Olympics last year and the silver medalist in the 10,000 meters in London in 2012, has been added as a late entry to Monday's Faxon Law New Haven 20K road race, the 20K national championship. Rupp, who mainly runs on the track, ran at the Manchester Road Race last fall. He finished 10th at Manchester after having an asthma attack due to cold weather.
Skeeters Topple Bees
Jake Hale threw a seven-inning three-hitter to lead the Sugar Land Skeeters to a 5-0 win over the Bees on Wednesday at New Britain Stadium. The game was played in New Britain because of the extensive flooding in the Sugar Land community in Texas. Joe Benson went 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a home run to lead Sugar Land's attack. Albert Cordero also homered. Nick Greenwood took the loss, giving up six hits and all five runs in six innings.
Catholic Boy Pulls Away
Robert LaPenta's Catholic Boy overcame a bump at the start and traffic in the final turn before finding space in the stretch and pulling away from a talented field of 2-year-old turf runners to win the Grade 3, $150,000 With Anticipation by one length at Saratoga Race Course. Catholic Boy, out of Bernardini mare Song of Bernadette, went off at 12-1 and paid $26.40 on a $2 win bet. Finishing second was Irish Territory followed by Untamed Domain.
Western On Top Of Poll
Western Connecticut earned three first-place votes and 44 points from the eight Little East coaches to narrowly claim the top spot in the 2017 preseason women's soccer coaches' poll. Eastern Connecticut also had three first-place votes but 43 points overall. Keene State had two first-place votes and 42 overall. On the men's side, UMass Boston was picked first. Eastern was third and Western fourth.
HPHS Golf Outing
The Hartford Public High School Athletic Hall of Fame golf outing is Sept. 23 at Goodwin Park in Hartford. The start time is 8:30; the $125 fee includes golf, cart, breakfast, lunch, raffle and a hat. Lunch only is $20 and starts at 1 p.m. Funds raised go toward student scholarships and defray costs for our induction class coming in the fall of 2018.
