Providing medical care for Fido can be as pricey as a major surgery for humans.
Pets Best Insurance of Boise, Idaho, a major provider of pet insurance, released its most expensive claims in providing coverage for animals.
"Vet costs are on the rise because pet owners are willing to spend almost any amount to save their pets," said Jack Stephens, founder and president of Pets Best Insurance. "But with pet insurance, the out-of-pocket cost can be substantially decreased, which may make pet health care more affordable."
Here are the top five most expensive claims in the company's words:
Car Accident — Pets Best Insurance received a claim for over $55,000 for a dog that was hit by a car and kept on life support for two weeks. The dog sustained fractures but is reportedly doing well!
Wobbler's Syndrome — This condition of the vertebrae causes a wobbly gait and weakness in dogs and some other animals. This claim came in at an astonishing $21,580.82 as the disease tends to gradually progress and X-rays, MRIs, steroids and surgery to correct the spinal cord compression is often necessary.
Cancer —Next on the list is a form of cancer called Meningioma, which came in at a whopping $15,533.
Intervertebral Disc Disease — This disease is a "slipped disk" in the spinal cord that often renders an animal unable to move or feel sensation in their limbs. CT scans, MRIs and surgery are generally all necessary. This claim came into Pets Best Insurance at nearly $14,400.
Endocarditis — This condition is an inflammation on the inside lining of the heart chambers and valves. A pet owner submitted a claim for over $11,000.
