On The Fly: UConn Legend Dee Rowe Nominated For Basketball Hall Of Fame

A good day at UConn. Congratulations Donald "Dee" Rowe. The former Worcester Academy and UConn coach will be nominated for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the contributors category by the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. The press release from the New England Hall said the nomination is supported by Celtics legend Bob Cousy and will be "further enhanced" by a coming book on Rowe's life by Providence Journal columnist Bill Reynolds. Rowe, a special adviser for athletics at UConn, led Worcester Academy to nine New England prep school titles and UConn to a Sweet 16 appearance in 1976. He was also an assistant for the Olympic team in 1980. Later in the day came news that UConn and Syracuse will renew their men's basketball rivalry with a game at Madison Square Garden in New York on Dec. 5. The longtime rivals in the old Big East also could meet beyond that game next season.

Contrary to some reports, the Miami Dolphins' first round draft pick, Laremy Tunsil, isn't in the clear when it comes to entering the NFL's drug program. "The reports regarding Laremy Tunsil's status are inaccurate," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement to USA Today Tuesday. "Any incoming player with behavior or conduct involving a substance of abuse will be evaluated by the program's advisers. Those clinical professionals, not the club, league or union will determine whether based on that evaluation the player should be entered into the program." A video released on Twitter just as the draft was starting showed Tunsil smoking a substance with a gas mask bong, and then taking off the mask.

Four Auburn football players were arrested over the weekend and cited on misdemeanor drug charges. Among them: freshman All-America cornerback Carlton Davis. ... Villanova's Kris Jenkins took his name out of consideration for early entry into the NBA draft Tuesday. That's probably not going to make Big East opponents happy, but coach Jay Wright and the Wildcats have to be loving that the man who hit the game-winning three at the buzzer to claim the national championship last month is coming back for his senior season. ... There's a wire story on it so it must be important to some: Kate Upton has announced her engagement to Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander. Upton took to the red carpet Monday at Met Gala in New York to show off her bling, er ring.
