Beverly Ellis, life-long liberal and fist in the air feminist, died on the eve of the Jewish New Year, September 9, 2018 with her daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Rob by her side. Bev was born in Hartford, CT Jan. 25, 1936 to Adele and Bill Simons. She attended the University of Bridgeport to train as a dental hygienist. After realizing her hands would have to be in the mouths of other people, she took a pass and started a family instead. Bev had interests, work wasn't one of them. After being employed by the State of Connecticut, she gave it her all until her pension kicked in, working 10 years and not one day more. She then focused her energies on inner city students and advancing their literacy by way of volunteering in the grammar schools of Hartford and reading to children at the Hartford Public Library. She also volunteered in the gift shop at the Hebrew Home. Bev was a great bridge player and a voracious reader, devouring three to four books a week. She never said no to a nice glass of red wine or listening to the jazz of Ella or Louis. Like Frank Sinatra, she loved cigarettes until the day she quit for her new granddaughter, Margaux. Her small stature was no match for her big presence. Having little to know filter, enabled Bev to let the one liner's rip and her wit expressed, making her a fan favorite at family get-together's and beyond. Her love of fashion was apparent in what she wore and how she carried herself. That fondness was assisted, in part, by Nordstrom's semi-annual sale, a pilgrimage she always made and enjoyed. Bev would talk to anyone and made friends easily. She leaves behind her brothers Clifford and Richard Simons along with her daughter, Julie, son-in-law Robert, ex-husband and friend, Arthur Ellis, granddaughters, Margaux and Nicole and many others. We are so grateful to the amazing staff of Atria Hamilton Heights for their unsurpassed care and friendship for Bev. Bev said no funeral, so we invite anyone who would like to celebrate her life, to join us Sunday, Sept. 23 from 2-5PM at the home of Julie and Rob Levine, 98 Sunny Reach Drive, West Hartford. Please consider a donation to: Hartford Public Schools. We find tremendous comfort in knowing Bev has traveled home and is reunited with her dear, beloved son, Keith Jeffrey Ellis.
