West Hartford War-Chief Sports Council Tailgate Fundraiser Saturday

The fifth annual War-Chief Sports Council Tailgate Fundraiser to support Hall and Conard sports programs is Saturday.

Saturday’s fundraiser is 6:30 to 10 p.m. at West Hartford Town Hall, 50 S. Main St. The all-you-can-eat dinner will include a DJ, photographer, and raffle and silent auction prizes. Auction items include vacation trips, ESPN tours and gift cards from businesses around town.

War-Chief Council Co-president Dennis Swanton said the fundraiser raises approximately $30,000 a year to use for different sports-related projects at both high schools, including a filming product called Hudl that student athletes and coaches can use for scouting and resume building for college applications.

The fundraiser also pays for 15 games to be broadcast through West Hartford Community Television and funded a visit from Chris Herren, a former NBA player who struggled with addiction, Swanton said.

Stemming from the 2010 Unite For Lights fundraiser to put lights on the two high school sports fields, the nonprofit War-Chief Council, deriving its name from the Warrior and Chieftain nicknames, has since raised money for a series of events and programs with a focus on sports. The nonprofit was formed in 2014, Swanton said.

Leaders with the War-Chief Council ask that those interested in attending the fundraiser dinner to go to war-chief.net to reserve tickets. Tickets are $50 a person and $20 for coaches.
