Los Imperios manager Ernesto Leon missed an agreed-upon rent payment of $8,400, according to court filings, and a marshal could remove belongings from the restaurant as early as next week.
LISARAJ, LLC, which owns the 7,000-square foot restaurant space on Farmington Avenue, said in an affidavit filed Friday that Leon failed to make the court-ordered December rent payment. In September, LISARAJ filed eviction paperwork and said Leon hadn’t paid rent since April.
In November, Hartford Housing Court Judge Joseph Pellegrino ordered Leon to pay $8,400 on Dec. 15, Jan. 15, Feb. 15 and March 7 to make up for back rent he owed to his landlord. Leon plans to move out of the space March 15, he has said.
Leon can object to the filing and have a judge review it. The earliest date a marshal could remove Leon’s belongings from the space is Jan. 3.
The embattled restaurant has been named in three court cases and has been the subject of investigations by police and the Department of Consumer Protection — mostly for complaints of excessive late-night noise and activity, including gunshots — and for selling alcohol to minors. Los Imperios’ social media presence has dwindled and the Facebook page for the restaurant has been deleted.
Earlier this month after receiving a petition signed by nearly 60 residents and hearing complaints about Los Imperios from residents, police and the mayor, the Department of Consumer Protection revoked Leon’s liquor permit.
Police submitted roughly 30 investigation referrals to the DCP — the most any police department has filed about a restaurant in the state — since the venue opened in 2014. The restaurant’s liquor permit has been suspended three times since September 2016.
West Hartford police responded to the restaurant so frequently that it posted two officers outside the space every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Earlier this month, a judge ruled that Leon must pay roughly $76,000 for that police detail.
Leon called the attack on his restaurant unfair and said he has tried to work with the town to resolve the issues.
