West Hartford Democrats Claim Town Council And School Board Victories

West Hartford Democrats claimed a victory in both town council and school board races Tuesday night. Party leaders said that Shari Cantor was the top vote-getter.

The results were called into Democratic town committee party leaders at a celebration at Rizzuto's. The town's registrar of voters is finalizing numbers at West Hartford Town Hall, and had not made numbers available as of 10:15 p.m.

"It's not easy as a woman to serve sometimes and I've had a lot of people who have supported me," Cantor said. "I want to say what a pleasure it is to serve with a really great group of people."

In a written statement, Democratic town committee chair Jonathan Slifka said that voters "sent a clear message about what they expect from their leaders and what they believe they have received under Democratic leadership in the past term and in recent years."

Town council winners, according to results called in to party headquarters, included Democrat incumbents Cantor, Beth Kerrigan, Leon Davidoff, Dallas Dodge, Ben Wenograd and Republicans Chris Barnes and Chris Williams with newcomers Democrat Liam Sweeney and Republican Mary Fay.

School board winners, also according to results called in to party headquarters, included Democrat incumbent Cheryl Greenberg and Democrat newcomers Lorna Thomas-Farquharson and Deb Polun, with newcomer Republican Robert Levine beating out incumbent republican Jay Sarzen.

Dennis Swanton, Republican town committee chair, said results reported to the committee were similar. He said he was "disappointed" in the results but that the party would "keep fighting."

"We need to work harder, we can't blame it on anything," Swanton said.
