Resort Lifestyle Communities will build its first project in the state next door to the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk.
The $30 million, 184,000-square-foot retirement community will be located to the northwest of Evergreen Walk and accessed along the southern portion of Hemlock Avenue eventually connecting to Tamarack Avenue. The project will be built on 8 acres of an 18-acre property currently home to several barns that will be dismantled and moved.
The 128-unit building will include studio, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom options. The resort-style community will be for adults 55 years old and older. The project received unanimous approval from the planning and zoning commission earlier this month.
According to Kelly Jo Hinrichs, marketing director at Resort Lifestyle Communities, the company is unique because there is no buy-in or long-term lease with residents paying a monthly fee.
The project will be built by RLC’s sister company, Cameron General Contractors. The companies have built 33 similar communities across the United States. This will be the second community in New England joining one in Portland, Maine, that is currently under construction. Once ground is broken, construction takes 16 to 18 months, Hinrichs said.
“We are building in the area because we found great success in towns like South Windsor, where seniors love their home and want to retire close to friends and family,” Hinrichs said. “There is a need in the area for a luxury community, where residents can engage in a full schedule of activities.”
Mayor M. Saud Anwar said Friday that the community is a great addition to South Windsor.
“In addition to boosting our tax base, it will provide a wide range of services that allow more seniors to live independently. The most successful communities both economically and culturally are those where people of all ages can live and prosper and this new project certainly fits with our long-term goals,” he said.
Hinrichs said activities in the community include painting classes, bingo, fitness events, shopping days and clubs. There are also live shows in a state-of-the-art theater. There are chef-prepared dining choices including fine dining, casual buffet and room service. There is also an on-site bank, hair salon and general store with pharmacy services.
Hinrichs said each apartment will be “designed for convenience, comfort” with a full kitchen, bathrooms and washer/dryer hookups. Maintenance and light weekly housekeeping are provided by the professional staff.
