Joey Garlic's To Open Manchester Restaurant

Owners of Joey Garlic’s — with restaurants in Farmington, Newington and West Hartford — are working to open a Manchester location.

Renovations are being done at the former Carrabba’s Italian Grill, 31 Red Stone Rd., to give the place “a whole new look,” Gary Gello, one of Joey Garlic’s owners, said Friday. The restaurant will open in May or June, Gello said.

The family-owned, Connecticut business specializes in New Haven-style brick oven pizza, according to a description at

Asked why he chose to expand in Manchester, Gello said, “We just thought it was another good area, far enough away from Newington.” The restaurant will employ about 60 people, he said.

Gello and partners Nick Romano and Anthony Sullo started the first Joey's on Route 6 in Farmington in 2007, followed about 1½ years later by the Newington restaurant on Kitts Lane. Joey’s Pizza Pie opened in 2011 on Park Rd. in West Hartford.

The original three partners are preparing for a split, Sullo said. He and Gello will run the Newington, Manchester and West Hartford restaurants and Romano will run the Farmington restaurant under another name, Sullo said.

The Manchester Carrabba’s closed in February. The approximately 5,670-square-foot building was constructed in 2006 on a .76-acre lot. The property is appraised at $1.4 million, according to assessor’s records.
