High School Football: Windsor Shuts Out Maloney, 28-0

Quarterback Julian Jackson threw two touchdown passes to support a stout team defensive effort as Windsor defeated Maloney, 28-0, in a CCC interdivision game Friday at O'Brien Field in Windsor.

Jackson connected with L.J. Wollcott and Jerry Woodard on TD passes of 34 and 25 yards, respectively, in the third quarter of the season opener. Woodard also recorded an interception. Windsor's defense had five sacks and held Maloney to 60 yards of total offense.

Shaun Hunter scored the game's first points on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Camoz Johnson scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth.

Middletown 29, Wethersfield 14: Stone Belzo accounted for three touchdowns to lead Middletown over Wethersfield, 29-12, in a CCC Division II game from Cottone Field at Wethersfield High.

Belzo was 3-for-8 passing for 50 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns. DeAaron Lawrence caught Belzo's TD pass from 25 yards out. Xavier Reyes added 127 rushing yards and David Colon had two fumble recoveries for Middletown (1-0).

Brendan Dowd passed for two touchdowns for Wethersfield (0-1): a 69-yard pass to Ryan Skelly in the third quarter and a 26-yard pass to David Colon in the fourth. Skelly finished with 82 yards receiving.

Stafford/East Windsor/Somers 36, Morgan 0: Colton Engel set the pace with three touchdowns, leading the co-op of Stafford, East Windsor, and Somers to a 36-0 opening night win over Morgan in a Pequot Inter game at Stafford High School.

Engel finished with 11 rushes for 142 yards, scoring on runs of 11 and 8 yards, and reached the end zone on a 75-yard kick return. Also for Stafford (1-0), Brandon Gardener recorded a sack in the end zone for a safety, Julien Revis ran for a 3-yard score and John Dickson had a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown.

On defense for Stafford, Jalen Irving had eight tackles, including two for loss, and two sacks, while John Kopek had nine tackles (two for loss) and a sack. With the loss, Morgan fell to 0-1.

Berlin 27, Bulkeley/HMTCA/Weaver 0: James Mazzarella, Zach Hrubiec and Alex Halkias all recorded rushing touchdowns to help Berlin beat the co-op of Bulkeley, HMTCA, and Weaver, 27-0, in a CCC interdivision game at Sage Park in Berlin.

Mazzarella opened the scoring with a 1-yard TD run, finishing with seven rushes for 52 yards, and was the game's leading receiver with four catches for 101 yards. Hrubiec was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 73 yards, including a 7-yard run to put Berlin (1-0) ahead 14-0 before halftime.

Halkias scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and kicker Giancarlo Tufano recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards for the game's final points in the fourth. Berlin quarterback Kevin Dunn was 10-for-21 with 182 yards and an interception. For Bulkeley (0-1), quarterback Luis Diaz was 8-for-16 for 112 yards and an interception.

South Windsor 41, East Hartford 14: Connor Kapisak threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns to help South Windsor defeat East Hartford, 41-14, in a CCC Division I East game at East Hartford High School.

Julian Ibes and Jimmy Tamburro contributed one touchdown each in the first half to help South Windsor (1-0) lead 21-0 at half time. Ben Custer caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Kapisak to end the third quarter and also ran for a five-yard touchdown to end the game.

East Hartford (0-1) running backs Kevon Jones and Raquan Tompkins brought in 2- and 15-yard touchdowns, respectively, in the second half. Jones also registered 14 tackles on defense in the loss.

Capital Prep/Achievement First 40, Griswold 26: Kyle Zajack passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns as Capital Prep/Achievement First defeated Griswold on the road in an interconference game. Zajack was 13-for-23 passing and was aided by Khyon Gillespie, who ran for 169 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns.

O'Neil Robinson made five catches for 208 yards and two touchdowns while John Edwards combined for 176 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns for Capital Prep.

Simsbury 42, Hall 7: Rafael Nieves' four touchdowns carried Simsbury to a win over Hall in a CCC Division I West game at the Hall High School stadium.

Nieves scored on runs of 97, 12 and 55 yards. Tate Valerio caught a 10-yard pass from Jackson Masters for a touchdown. Angel Serrano scored in the second quarter on a 4-yard run and Kory Zall connected on every extra point for Simsbury (1-0). Desmond Richards scored for Hall (0-1) on a 4-yard run.

Sheehan 41, Law 26: Terrence Bogan and Jordan Davis combined for over 300 rushing yards and five touchdowns to help Sheehan beat Jonathan Law in an SCC inter game at Sheehan High.

Bogan was the game's leading rusher with 22 carries for 203 yards, including TD runs of 4, 12 and 74 yards, all in the first half. Davis had 16 rushes for 113 yards and a 1-yard TD run. Quarterback Wes Terzi was 7-for-9 for 210 yards with a 12-yard passing TD to Davis, and had a 10-yard rushing TD for Sheehan (1-0).

Michael Plaskon reached the end zone twice on the ground for Law (0-1), scoring on runs of 1 and 2 yards. Zach Smith threw a 19-yard TD pass to Dean Pettway as well as a 15-yard TD pass to Ethan Saley as time expired.
