Middletown High school valedictorian David Lane, 18, is heavily involved in music and the arts, having served in several leadership positions. He was president of the Drama Club, President of Tri-M Music Honor Society, and captain of the band, where he played alto saxophone. As a member of the drama club, Lane worked hard to help produce two productions per year, a spring musical and a fall play. This past year, he played the role of George Dibbs, the male lead in Our Town, in the fall. "George Dibbs is a simple character who personifies the message of embracing whatever goes on in your day-to-day life," said Lane, who said he identified with the character. Academically, Lane excels in the sciences and plans to pursue a major in physics or molecular biology at Middlebury College this fall. Lane chose Middlebury because he wanted to go somewhere "small and personal, and Middlebury stood out for those reasons," he said. "It really never occurred to me -- the strength of academics that I was achieving until maybe last year, but I attribute a lot of my success to my teachers and my parents and have really helped me become who I am today," said Lane. Lane says he isn't particularly athletic, but enjoys getting out in nature, hiking, and just enjoying the view. He looks forward to a relaxing summer playing strategy games with friends and attending a family reunion. --Chloe Miller
