Feb. 3; 2010: Aetna employees learned Wednesday if they were among about 625 to be laid off this week. The health insurer cut 625 jobs companywide in November and about that many again this week. In Connecticut, 160 workers were laid off in November and more than 100 this week. Nov. 18, 2009: As its customer base slips and health care reform looms, Aetna is laying off 625 employees now and will make a similar number of reductions early next year, the company said. The current cuts include 160 jobs in Connecticut, a spokesman said. No figure is available for Connecticut layoffs in the 2010 round. Aetna Inc. announced on Dec. 17, 2008, that it is laying off 1,000 employees companywide, including about 375 in Connecticut nearly 5 percent of its workforce here to protect profits in a declining economy.
