Broadway Community To Headline Newtown Benefit Concert

Brian Stokes Mitchell, Linda Eder Part Of Jan. 28 'From Broadway With Love' Concert

Broadway will show that it cares when stars, producers, writers, and directors come together for “From Broadway with Love: A Benefit Concert For Sandy Hook” on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at Waterbury's Palace Theater. 

Linda Eder ("Jekyll & Hyde"), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Tony winner for "Kiss Me Kate" and three-time nominee) composer Stephen Schwartz (six-time Tony nominee, including "Wicked," "Godspell"), Mickey Dolenz ("Aida," member of The Monkees), composer Marc Shaiman (Tony Award winner for "Hairspray;" TV’s  "Smash"), Michael Cerveris (Tony winner for "Assassins," four-time Tony nominee ,including "Evita" and "Sweeney Todd") and Christine Ebersole (Tony winner for "Grey Gardens") will be among the performers.

Also: composer Frank Wildhorn (Tony nominations for "Bonnie & Clyde," "Civil War"and  "Jekyll & Hyde"), Philip Boykin (Tony nominee: "Porgy and Bess," Hartt School grad), Richard Kind ("The Producers," TV's "Mad About You"), Andrea McArdle (Tony nominee: "Annie," "Les Miserables"), Nikki Blonsky (film "Hairspray"), Alan Muraoka ("Pacific Overtures," TV’s "Sesame Street"), Jan Maxwell (five-time Tony nominee, including "Follies"), Robin De Jesus (Tony nominee for "La Cage Aux Folles" and "In the Heights"), Seth Rudetsky ("The Ritz"), Julia Murney ("Wicked," "Lennon"), Isabela Moner ("Evita") as well as cast members from "Million Dollar Quartet,"  Lance Guest, Erik Hayden, Randy Redd, Dan Mills, and Victoria Matlock

More performers will be announced soon.

Newtown area residents Brett Boles, author of the musical "Foreverman," and Broadway producer Van Dean, initiated the event.

“The outpouring of love and support from the Broadway community has been incredibly heartwarming,” said Dean in a statement, “and everyone was looking for a way they could use their talents to bring something positive to the community. 'From Broadway with Love' provides them with the perfect outlet to do so.”

 The show is directed by Michael Unger together with Jeff Calhoun, Stephen Nachamie, David Lee and Daisy Prince. David Thompson (book writer of "The Scottsboro Boys") is helping to shape the show.

The show is produced by Van Dean and Kenny Howard of the Broadway Consortium, Jennifer Isaacson, Ken Mahoney, Sarahbeth Grossman, Bethney Ruggiero, Michael Alden, Rob Hinderliter and Yvette Kojic.

Jeffrey Saver ("End of the Rainbow") is the music director who will be conducting an orchestra consisting of many Broadway musicians.  Technical supervisor is Tom Bussey, sound designer is John Petrafesa, lighting designer is David Agress, scenic designer is Tom McPhillips, production stage manager is Zoya Kachadurian.

"Tickets will be provided at no cost to the families directly affected by the tragedy and any first responders who were at the school that day," according to the press release for the event. "For the Sandy Hook Elementary School's students, families, teachers, and administrators, a limited number of tickets are available for free on a first-come first-served basis.  A limited number of tickets for the public for the 2,600-seat theater are now on sale, ranging from $50 to $250.
