Southington PD: Three-Time Burglar Steals Dog, Gets Arrested After Chase

A man forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s Southington home early Friday, took her dog and fled from officers during a chase that involved three police agencies and ended with his capture, police said.

It was the third burglary he is suspected of committing at the woman’s house this month, police said.

George Degrandis, 39, of New Britain, was arrested on charges including second-degree burglary, criminal mischief, engaging police in pursuit and reckless driving, police said.

According to Southington police, Degrandis sped away from state troopers and from officers from Southington and New Britain. The chase went from I-84 to Route 72 to Route 9.

The pursuit ended in Middletown when troopers were able to throw tire-puncturing stop sticks on Route 9 south, police said.

In addition to the new charges, Degrandis was arrested on warrants from alleged burglaries on Oct. 1 and Oct. 18. He forced his way into the woman’s home on Oct. 1, police said, and on Oct. 18 he went into her home without the woman’s permission and forcibly took her cellphone.

Police said he also faces a charge of failure to appear in court.
