Police say a 10-year-old boy was mauled by a stray pit bull Friday morning.
Officers were called to 155 Lexington Ave. at 10:40 a.m. for the incident. The child was playing in the home’s driveway, but does not live at the home, police said.
The dog was loose and its owner is not known, police said.
A passerby saw the attack and went to the boy’s assistance, eventually separating the boy and the dog. The passerby was able to hold onto the dog until police arrived. The dog is now under quarantine in the New Haven police department animal shelter.
The boy suffered bites to the face, but police said his injuries are not life-threatening. He was treated at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Police said that if they can find the dog’s owner, he or she will likely face charges.
