Gas Leak Forced Evacuations In New Haven, Police Say

Some New Haven schools were evacuated on Wednesday morning because of a gas leak near the Hamden line, police said.

There are no reports of injuries. Motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the streets in the Whitney Avenue and Canner Street areas of the city’s East Rock neighborhood, Officer David Hartman said.

Police blocked off roads to the east and west of Whitney Avenue, but by late Wednesday morning crews were focusing more narrowly on Livington and Willow streets, east of Whitney Avenue, he said.

Livingston Street was closed between Willow and Canner streets and Cold Spring Street was closed between Everit and Orange streets, he said.

Southern Connecticut Gas and the New Haven Fire Department are investigating the leak.
