A driver who had been involved in a crash on Route 72 Tuesday night got out of his car and jumped off the highway to his death, state police said.
A passenger in the car was severely injured in the crash, which happened about 8:45 p.m. near Exit 7 in New Britain, they said.
According to police, David Rodriguez, 55, of Washington Street in New Britain lost control of his 2001 Toyota Camry and collided with the guardrail on the right side of the road, then crossed all travel lanes and crashed into the jersey barrier on the left side of the highway.
“After the crash, Rodriguez exited his vehicle and jumped off the overpass,” Trooper Kelly Grant said. Rodriguez was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
Rodriguez didn’t appear to be injured in the collision, but the passenger, Norma Vargas, 49, who lives at the same address, sustained life-threatening injuries, state police said.
Vargas was listed in serious condition at Hartford Hospital Wednesday, hospital spokesman Matt Clyburn said.
