Police found more than 200,000 photos and more than 100 videos of child pornography on the phone of a former University of Connecticut instructor and researcher.

Jason Derek Gibson, 38, was arrested Aug. 16 and charged with first-degree illegal possession of child pornography.

Gibson worked as a molecular and cell biology assistant research professor at the UConn Storrs campus, according to the affidavit for his arrest. His contract ended earlier this year before the investigation started, according to the university.

Gibson told police he downloaded the images because he was “curious,” according to the affidavit compiled by UConn police.

The investigation began in June when Glastonbury police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who had been notified of Gibson by the FBI. The original tipster reported that a UConn professor was a member in a chatroom known as “Sweet Children,” on the messaging app, “Whatsapp.”

Gibson shared pornographic videos with the group through a Whatsapp account that was linked to his cell phone number, according to the affidavit. Officers called the number and reached Gibson who surrendered his phone.

Thousands of pornographic images and videos of children were found encrypted on Gibson’s phone. The former professor admitted to downloading the content, according to the affidavit.

Gibson told police he may have used UConn’s internet network to download the images, according to the affidavit.

Gibson is a Glastonbury resident, but told police in interviews that he had recently become homeless. He is no longer affiliated with UConn, a spokeswoman said Friday evening.
