A man delivering pizza complied when an armed robber demanded cash in East Haven Monday night, but resisted when the masked man insisted on taking his car, too, and was shot in the leg, police said.
The gunfire prompted 911 calls that led to the robber’s arrest, police said Tuesday.
The man police say was the robber, Shawn Baker, 38, was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal possession of a weapon, among other charges, police said. He was in custody overnight on $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Superior Court in New Haven Tuesday.
According to police, several 911 calls came in about a possible shooting in the area of 42 Forbes Place about 10:15 p.m. Officers were nearby and got to the scene quickly.
Officers found two men on the ground, fighting, on Forbes Place. One, the pizza deliveryman, was on top of the other man, later identified as Baker, holding him down after wresting the gun away from him, police said.
As the officers approached, the deliveryman yelled to the officers that he had been shot in the leg. Nearby was a gun, a black ski mask and white latex gloves, police said. The officers broke up the fight and took Baker into custody.
The deliveryman told officers that Baker had demanded money and he complied, handing over cash. But when Baker demanded his vehicle, too, the victim began to fight, police said.
Baker shot him in his left leg, the victim told police. Baker tried to shoot a second time but was unsuccessful because his gun jammed, police said.
