An 18-year-old charged with arson in Bloomfield Thursday is suspected of starting fires at the same apartment on Christmas Eve and at his New Britain home on Dec. 20, police said.
Isaiah Hellandbrand was charged with arson and risk of injury to a minor after Thursday’s fire at Apt. 9-B, 9 Woodland Ave., police said.
That fire was reported about 8:20 a.m., and the apartment was engulfed in flames when officers arrived. Two children were taken to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to be checked for possible smoke inhalation, officials said.
The apartment was uninhabitable, although other apartments in the building may be lived in, Capt. Stephen Hajdasz said.
About 2:20 p.m. Sunday, Christmas Eve, a mattress fire was reported at the same apartment, Hajdasz said. That fire was believed to have been started by a cigarette, although an electrical cause has not been ruled out.
There also was a fire at Hellandbrand’s home in New Britain on Dec. 20, he said. His family was staying at the Bloomfield apartment because of that fire, Hajdasz said.
Police continue to investigate the previous fires.
