Providence Guard Kris Dunn Of New London Is Big East Preseason Player Of The Year

Villanova is preseason pick.

Providence College junior guard Kris Dunn of New London was named the Big East Preseason Player of the Year at the conference's annual media day Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Dunn, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, is on numerous preseason All-America teams and is on the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, which goes to the nation's top point guard.

Last season Dunn averaged 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.7 steals. He was the first Providence player to earn the Big East Player of the Year honor and the first guard in the history of the league to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Dunn was third in the nation in assists and steals per game.

At New London High School, Dunn was a McDonald's All-American, Jordan All-American, Parade All-American and Gatorade State Player of the Year.

Villanova was the unanimous pick of the Big East coaches in the preseason poll for the second straight year.

The Wildcats lived up to the billing last season, winning their second straight regular-season title with a 16-2 record, and then won the Big East Tournament. They finished 33-3 and were No. 2 in the final AP poll.

Two starters return — seniors Daniel Ochefu and Ryan Arcidiacono, last season's conference co-player of the year. They will be joined by a recruiting class that includes guard Jalen Brunson, the Preseason Rookie of the Year.

Georgetown is second in the preseason poll, followed by Butler, Xavier, Providence, Marquette, Seton Hall, DePaul, Creighton and St. John's.

The preseason first team is Dunn, Arcidiacono, Butler's Kellen Dunham and Roosevelt Jones, Georgetown's D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, and Xavier's Jalen Reynolds.

DePaul was picked No. 1 on the women's side.
