State Awarding Grants to Help Alleviate Traffic Issues

A new grant is helping alleviate traffic concerns after a West Michigan manufacturer announced they will be bringing nearly 1,000 jobs to the area.

Wednesday it was announced that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be awarding state transportation economic grants to Lenawee and Ottawa counties. The grants will total over $1.6 million according to a news release.

In Ottawa County, Gentex Corp., which manufactures high-tech interior and exterior mirrors for the automotive industry, is planning to build a manufacturing complex on a 140 acre site. The site is on 88th St. north of Riley Rd., and currently has limited access for traffic.

Gentex expects to create 960 jobs and invest more than $100 million in the first four phases of their new operation.

The estimated costs for the transpiration improvements needed to handle the additional area traffic generated by the plant totals a little over $1.4 million.

Gentex and the township are both contributing around a quarter-million for the project, with nearly $1 million coming from state funds.
