Rep. Shirley Chisholm

In 1969, Rep. Shirley Chisholm, of New York, was sworn in as the first African-American woman in Congress. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives until 1983. She ran for president in 1972, becoming the first African-American candidate on a major party ticket as well as the first woman to do so. Hartford Courant
