WATERBURY — A city man faces charges after he fired a gun inside his house Monday night and threatened to kill himself, sparking a nearly five-hour standoff, police said.
Police said they were called about 7 p.m. to a report of an armed, suicidal man who was barricaded inside 11 Greenbow St. The Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiations Team responded and talked to the man, Mario Clay, 31.
Clay was taken into custody at 11:50 p.m., they said. No one was injured.
He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said; they planned to arrest him when he is released.
Clay is expected to be charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm because he fired a gun during the standoff, Deputy Chief Christopher Corbett said. He also will be charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree breach of peace, he said.
No one was in the house with Clay during the standoff, Corbett said, although marital problems are what sparked the incident.
