An 88-year-old woman was attacked by a raccoon she inadvertently let into her home in Hamden.

HAMDEN — A raccoon that entered an 88-year old Hamden woman's home Sunday night, attacked her and charged police officers before it was euthanized tested positive for rabies, police said Tuesday.

The woman, who was not identified, had let her pet cat inside her home through a sliding door at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday when the raccoon followed behind. The woman thought the raccoon was her cat and tried to pet it, police said, and the raccoon attacked her.

Police said the raccoon bit the elderly woman on her elbow, hand, forearm, lip and chin. Police said the raccoon charged two arriving police officers and was euthanized.

The woman was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital by ambulance, where she was treated and released.

Police said the victim's family was notified immediately of the findings so that they can take the necessary precautions and that no officers had direct contact with the animal.
