Politically conservative men stop having sex at age 68 on average, while men with more liberal political views continue to engage in sex into their 80s.
This finding comes from something called "The Grant Study," which has been tracking 268 male Harvard graduates since 1938.
The long-term study looked at everything from personality type, to drinking, to relationships with your mother, to, well, you name it.
While the subjects of this survey are not people anyone would confuse with average Americans, the findings are interesting and if nothing else might help explain certain behavior you see at the Yale-Harvard game.
Some of the findings were less than earth shattering: When abused, alcohol was a big problem and a major cause of divorce.
Some of the results were surprising: The incomes of men with IQs in excess of 150 were not significantly greater than that of men with IQs in the 110-115 range (legacies?).
Some of the results were really interesting: Men who had warm childhood relationships with their mothers earned more money, while those who had poor relationships with mom were more prone to develop dementia. (FYI, Mother's Day is May 12.)
As for fathers, men who had a warm relationship with dear old dad had lower anxiety later in life, and greater enjoyment of vacations.
Anyway, back to political orientation and sex. Why the discrepancy? No one, it seems, has any idea. Not to fear, having given this some thought, here are a few possible explanations:
Conservatives are, after all, conservative, and decorum dictates that it is no longer acceptable for men of a certain age to be engaging in the wild thing.
Liberals are less uptight by nature, and have a more robust fantasy life, which of course, is a major plus when you are 80 and naked.
Conservatives believe sex should be earned the old fashioned way, and that pharmaceutical foreplay — the little blue pill — is kind of like bad sportsmanship.
Liberals are still of the view you should take it anyway you can get it and not just when the jet stream is right and the moon is full.
Conservatives watch Fox News for the news.
Liberals watch Fox News for the female anchors — with the sound off.
