SOUTH WINDSOR — Police seized almost 140 lbs. of marijuana on Thursday from an alleged growing operation based in South Windsor and Stafford as a result of surveillance by the East Central Narcotics Task Force.

According to police, task force members conducting surveillance on Neiderwerfer Road in South Windsor witnessed a suspect come out of a wooded area off the road and get into his vehicle. They followed the vehicle into Ellington, where they stopped the suspect with the help of the town's resident state trooper.

During the stop, police allegedly found 8 lbs. of marijuana inside the passenger compartment and arrested the driver, identified as 54-year-old Stuart Klotzer, of Stafford.

Task force members then searched the wooded area Klotzer had been seen leaving from and found another 69.5 lbs. of marijuana, police said. A search of Klotzer's Patten Road home in Stafford yielded an additional 60 lbs., according to police.

The estimated street value of the marijuana is $348,750, police said.

Klotzer was charged with possession and cultivation of marijuana, operating a drug factory and possession with intent to sell. He was held with bail set at $25,000.
