A New Jersey police officer was shot and killed in his car after responding to an armed robbery call at a Walgreen's pharmacy early on Sunday, officials said.
Jersey City police officer Melvin Santiago was shot in the head by a suspected robber while still sitting in his police vehicle, Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement. Santiago was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"Today was a horrible day for Jersey City," Fulop said. "Melvin was an officer who represented everything one would want to see in a police officer."
The shooter is suspected of striking a Walgreen's armed security guard and stealing his gun, which police believe was the weapon used in the shooting, Fulop said.
The suspect was killed by police after a brief gun battle, Fulop said.
The case is still under investigation, and the identity of the shooter has not been released.
