A man struck by a truck on the Indiana tollway in Porter County is recovering in a Chicago hospital today while an investigation continues into why he walked into traffic.
About 1:30 p.m. Thursday Jeffery P. Bohannon of Westville, Ind., walked into eastbound traffic on the Indiana East-West Tollway (I-80) at the 35.5 mile marker and was hit by a semitrailer-tractor truck driven by Winston Taylor Lewis Jr. from Kalamazoo, Michigan, according to a release from the Indiana State Police.
Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso and then was airlifted to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn with apparent head injuries, police said.
An incorrect report had stated that Bohannon died of his injuries, but police provided the correct account and said by Friday he was in serious condition.
Police were continuing to investigate why Bohannon walked into the traffic on the interstate, but no motive was yet available. No citations were expected against the driver, according to the ISP.
