A resident brought a severely maimed female pit bull to animal control headquarters in Millersville on March 3. The dog was found wandering on Ritchie Highway near 11th Avenue the day before, officers said.
The female had deep scars and was suffering from numerous bite wounds, including a gaping gash under her front arm. Despite her physical condition, officers found the animal to have a good temperament and opted to have her treated at Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital, whose staff was already treating the male dog.
Both animals are expected to survive, officers said.
Animal Control and Anne Arundel police are investigating. Officers seek any information on suspicious activities, such as high numbers of dogs, particularly dominant breed dogs, housed in one location; abandoned or injured dogs; or suspicious crowds of people.
Officers are asking the public's help to identify those responsible for the dogs' injuries. The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of as much as $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible.
