I am working on some future stories on local hometown heroes. If you know of someone who spends their time helping others, let me know. I am especially interested in folks who are perhaps older, or who have some challenges of their own. Send any suggestions my way to firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also find me on Facebook and Twitter.
And finally, St. Patrick's Day is almost here! I hope you will join many of us from WDBJ7 at the annual parade in downtown Roanoke this Saturday morning at 11:00. Leo says it's supposed to be warm. We'll just hope for the luck o' the Irish that the rain will hold off until later in the day. Happy St. Patty's Day weekend everyone!

Hi there! Hope you can tune in tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 6:00 for my special report, "Forever Family." I will profile a family who has adopted not one, but three foster children...with a fourth one on the way. They will share their journey of becoming a family, and we will also get some expert advice on what prospective adoptive parents should consider.
This is all against the backdrop of a pending new law in Virginia. Governor McDonnell is expected to sign legislation that would allow private adoption agencies to not allow people to adopt based on factors like age, political orientation or sexual orientation. We'll delve into the adoption issue Thursday night at 6 in "Forever Family."
And before that, tomorrow on WDBJ7 Mornin' I will have two live interviews with an adoption specialist from Commonwealth Catholic Charities. She'll share her perspective on the new adoption law.
Hope you will tune in!

Thanks for checking out my blog! I haven't had a chance to do it very much recently. I have been very busy working on a sweeps story that's airing later this month on adoption in Virginia. We are profiling a wonderful family who lives in Bedford County who has adopted not one, but three foster children. I look forward to sharing more of their story with you later on!
Our "Early Years" segment this week on the morning show focused on child custody rules here in Virginia. There is new focus on that topic, in the aftermath of the tragic story out of Washington State. Police say Josh Powell set his own home on fire, killing himself and his two young sons. Powell was in the midst of a custody battle with his missing wife's parents. It seems every day there is a new detail that comes out about that situation. It is all so sad. I don't understand how a father could do that to his own children, especially kids whose custody he was fighting so hard to re-gain.
On a much happier note, Valentine's Day is coming up. If you're looking for a fun way to celebrate this weekend, you can attend tonight's accapella concert at Virginia Tech, featuring a student group. It is not only a performance, but also a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Whatever you do this weekend, bundle up! Leo says wind chills are going to drop to near zero Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Hi there! It's a rainy Monday, but I for one will take this kind of weather over a foot of snow. Of course, there are many people who would disagree with me there! I wouldn't mind seeing one good-sized snow in February, and then move on to spring. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what Mother Nature has in mind!
It was great to see so many of you out at the Roanoke Civic Center Saturday night for the Guns and Hoses hockey game to benefit the MDA. They were able to raise $27,000.00! And it was a fun way to spend a Saturday evening, too. My son, Christopher was quite taken with the "Crime Dog" mascot for the Guns team! And the Guns won it, despite the GREAT coaching of the Hoses team by my sidekick, our very own Meteorologist Leo Hirsbrunner. Thanks to everyone who came out!
Coming up this Thursday on "Early Years" on News 7 Mornin, we will have a live interview about the Virginia Star Quality Initiative, which serves as a guide for parents searching for good quality daycare and preschool facilities. Join us for that!

Happy new year! Yes, I am a few days late with that one! But hey, at least we're still just in the first week of 2012. Hope your year is off to a great start! I enjoyed having the week off between Christmas and New Year's Day. I got to spend a lot of time with family and friends, and have a few visit from out of town, which is always special. And of course, we got to break in all of the new toys the kids got from Santa!
