The average temperature was 37 degrees for the meteorological spring, the coldest one on record, according to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen.
The meteorological spring spans March, April and May, according to the service. The next coldest average was 37.5 degrees, recorded in 1950.
For comparison, the normal average for spring is 43.6 degrees and the 2012 spring average was 63.4 degrees, said Taylor Trogdon, a meteorologist with the service.
"We certainly had a cool start, and it looks like it's going to continue for at least a little while," he said. "The climatological pattern we're in now just favors cooler average temperatures along a lot of the Northern Plains."
Mobridge also experienced a record low, recording an average temperature of 39.2 degrees for the spring, the fourth coldest on record, according to the weather service.
