Boyd Perkins, director of bands at Northern State University, has been named South Dakota Outstanding Bandmaster by the international bandmaster fraternity Phi Beta Mu.
He received the award March 23 during the 2013 All-State Band Grand Concert in Rapid City.
Perkins, who serves as chairman of the NSU music department, has worked at Northern for 10 years.
“I am honored and humbled to have been recognized for this award,” Perkins said in a news release. “My success at Northern is due to incredible administrative support and talented and committed colleagues in the music department, as well as dedicated and determined students.”
Perkins’ teaching duties include applied low brass studies, instrumental conducting, marching band, symphonic band, marching band techniques, music education courses, brass methods, brass instrument care and repair, graduate courses in conducting, graduate courses in music education and student-teacher supervision.
Perkins led the NSU Marching Wolves to the 2005 and 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. Also under his leadership, the Marching Wolves represented South Dakota in the 2006 Waikiki Holiday Parade, commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Perkins added that he would like to thank NSU School of Fine Arts dean Alan LaFave “and the faculty, staff and students at NSU for their dedication and patience as we work to improve and create meaningful student experiences in the region and South Dakota.”
As a euphonium performer, Perkins has been the runner-up in the national Music Teachers National Association-Wurlitzer Brass competition and has appeared as a soloist with numerous high school, college and community bands. He is also state representative for the National Band Association, state representative for the College Band Directors National Association and editor of South Dakota Musician magazine.
A native of Brookings, Perkins earned his doctorate of musical arts and master’s degree in wind conducting from the University of Iowa. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education with instrumental and vocal emphases from South Dakota State University.
