One person was killed in a vehicle accident Tuesday evening in a construction zone in the Industrial Park, close to the intersection of North Enterprise Street and Capital Avenue Northeast, police Capt. Dave McNeil said.
Details of the accident were still under investigation as of Tuesday evening, McNeil said.
It was unclear what vehicle or vehicles were involved in the accident.
The victim, whose name will not be released until family members are notified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, said Michael Carlsen, Brown County coroner.
Emergency responders were called to the scene of the accident at about 5:15 p.m. Officers from the Aberdeen Police Department, deputies from the Brown County Sheriff's Office and troopers from the South Dakota Highway Patrol were all on scene for several hours after the initial call.
Fire trucks and an ambulance from Aberdeen Fire and Rescue also arrived at the scene, but left the area after about 30 minutes.
No one else suffered any injuries in the accident, said Todd Salfrank, battalion chief with Aberdeen Fire and Rescue.
Many of the construction workers appeared to shaken by the accident. About 30 minutes after the accident was called in, a young man ran down the road and hugged a crying worker as law enforcement was speaking with witnesses.
At about 5:50 p.m., a state trooper wrapped yellow caution tape around a semi-trailer in the construction area. It is unclear what role, if any, the truck played in the crash.
More information on the crash will be released today, an officer at the scene said.
