Bridging Americana, extended jamming, classic rock, angular spazz-outs and experimental atmospherics, Wilco folds a lot of wide-ranging musical elements into its shows.

It’s all held in place by frontman Jeff Tweedy’s songs, voice and sensibility. For more than 20 years Tweedy has assembled an evolving crew of talented multi-instrumentalists and sweet harmonizers to play his music.

Last year, the band put its own twist on the ever-more-challenging trend of grabbing attention for a new record by releasing “Star Wars,” a surprise album, and giving free downloads away online, offering an unexpected surprise treat for fans. In recent years, Tweedy has produced records for eminences like Mavis Staples and Bill Fay while also making a solid album with his son, Spencer, and, with Wilco, presiding over the equally solid Solid Sound Festival in western Massachusetts.

The band excels at live shows in settings like the one it will play at New Haven’s College Street Music Hall on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. $35 to $45. 203-867-2000 and collegestreetmusichall.com.
