They didn’t call him Whistler for nothing. The great mother-painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler loved music. Yale students will perform “Musical Arrangements That Inspired Whistler,” Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m. at Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St., New Haven.

The concert’s a prelude to “Whistler in Paris, London and Venice,” a new exhibit that opens Jan. 30 at the gallery and runs through July 10. Each city is represented by a set of Whistler etchings, done at three different phases of his career. 203-432-0600, artgallery.yale.edu.
