There’s a reason Lady Gaga wanted to collaborate with Tony Bennett on an album of jazz standards: Bennett is super cool and Gaga wanted to glom onto it.

He’s been singing with a warm, mellow charm that seems effortless but is obviously the result of serious study, immense control, natural gifts and good taste. In 1951, Bennett had a hit with Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart,” which served to introduce a larger audience to country music. Later, Bennett recorded with jazz giants like Art Blakey, Bill Evans and Count Basie. At 89, he can still sing.

Tony Bennett comes to Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville, Friday, April 1, at 8 p.m. $39 and $59. 860-226-7711 and mohegansun.com.
