Toby Keith can be sort of sentimental when it comes to the unifying power of booze. On "Drunk Americans," the stupefying effects of alcohol obliterate all the distinctions that we get hung up on when sober. It's a woozy waltz about not caring what someone's political affiliation is.
But don't mistake Keith for a "Coexist" bumper sticker kind of guy. When he's singing about getting warlike in the face of attacks against the U.S., like on "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," Keith sings "We'll put a boot in your ass/It's the American way."
Keith is all about the flag-waving and the Solo-cup swilling. Maybe the best compliment one could pay to Keith is to say that he seemed like the right guy to pay tribute to the late Merle Haggard at the 2016 American Country Countdown award, and he did it admirably. Keith obviously picked up a few pointers from Hag's "You're Walking On the Fighting Side of Me."
Toby Keith plays at Xfinity Theatre, 61 Savitt Way, Hartford, Saturday, July 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.75 to $95.75. livenation.com.
