In the summer of 1991, Boris Yelstin was elected president of Russia. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System had its stateside debut. And a wordless show called Stomp, involving eight carefully choreographed percussionists wandering around sparsely filled sets, beating the pulp out of garbage can lids, premiered at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

The show, which heads to the Garde Arts Center in New London on Sunday, went on to influence pop culture in unsurprisingly noisy ways, from “Sesame Street” to lavish Las Vegas productions. Showtime is 5 p.m.on Sunday, Feb. 22. Information: gardearts.org.
