Bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Pat Metheny are giants on their instruments and giants in jazz.

Carter has played with everyone, including as a rhythm-section anchor and compositional contributor to the classic Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-’60s.

Metheny (pictured) — in addition to having worked with Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and Ornette Coleman — has made notable duo recordings with Brad Mehldau and Jim Hall.

They’re peripatetic dudes. Both Metheny and Carter play in large and small settings, but a

chance to hear them as a duo doubtless will offer plenty of virtuosity and philosophical good taste in terms of soloing, repertoire and exquisite tone.

Expect to possibly hear standards by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Antonio Carlos Jobim performed with clarity and precision. Both Carter and Metheny have a restless drive when it comes to performing and recording in varied configurations, but their music is never scattershot or seemingly off-the-cuff. They’re remarkably controlled explorers.

Ron Carter and Pat Metheny play at Infinity Hall, 20 Greenwoods Road W., Norfolk, on Thursday, April 21, at 8 p.m. $74 to $94 866-666-6306 and infinityhall.com.
