Raised in Canton, saxophonist Noah Preminger has been churning out music for years, and he just turned 30 this summer. He’s based out of New York City these days, and he’s on a course of putting out a new record every six months.

His reverence for African-American music, both avant-garde and roots, has been clear for years, demonstrating a taste for artists like Ornette Coleman and Blind Willie Johnson. He’s paid tribute to the Delta and gospel blues on his 2016 record “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,” which was recorded at Old Lyme’s Side Door.

His quartet is an exciting group, with a drummer that can evoke the churning triplets and polyrhythms of Elvin Jones and a trumpet player who pairs lyrical and restrained harmonies with Preminger’s energetic playing.

The Noah Preminger Quartet plays a free show at Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford, Monday, Aug. 8, as a part of the Hartford Jazz Society’s Monday Night Jazz series. Opening act Jeff Fuller Trio starts at 6 p.m. Preminger starts at 7:30 p.m. hartfordmondaynightjazz.com.
