New Duke has studied the style and spirit of the first several decades of one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Duke Ellington.

The octet, led by bassist/arranger Brian Torff (who’s also known locally as music program director at Fairfield University), is to Duke what Dark Star Orchestra is to the Grateful Dead: reverent yet rhythmic; idolatrous yet in-the-moment and improvisational; musical scholars in search of a vibe.

New Duke brings its Ellingtonisms to Fairfield Theatre Company, 70 Sanford St., Fairfield, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, then to Ellington Jazz Series(!) at Yale’s Sprague Hall, 470 College St., New Haven, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. Tickets to the FTC show cost $22; the Yale show is $20, $10 for students. Information: fairfieldtheatre.org for Dec. 3, music-tickets.yale.edu for Dec. 4.
