Production duties for “Home Before Dark,” the singer-songwriter’s 2008 album, were handled by Rick Rubin, a producer known for getting artists to strip way back or explore new genres. For “Melody Road,” Diamond’s 2014 Capitol Records debut, he tapped Don Was; again, the album sounds like Neil. Both records cracked the Billboard top 10, with “Home Before Dark” reaching number one.
