Mothers is the name of the musical project of Athens, Georgia-based artist Kristine Leschper. It started out as a solo effort, but Leschper has turned it into a band. Fans of Angel Olsen, Joanna Newsom, and Julien Baker might find much to enjoy in this stark and emotional music.

You might also hear echoes of Bjork and the Heartless Bastards in places, mostly in the way Leschper pushes her voice to extremes of nakedness. Leschper carves out little dips and breaks in her voice, making it break or go quiet for an instant, giving a sense of wear and vulnerability. Hints of yodels, yips, vocal shivers, wispy head voice, and half-choked notes catch the ear.

Lyrically Leschper seems to be exploring feelings of nose-diving self-worth at times, which can make you squirm or maybe cry. The band’s album, “When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired,” goes from skeletal pairings of piano and what might be ukulele to more elaborate chamber settings with strings, to trebly band mode. It’s all marked by Leschper’s distinctive singing and the peculiar ache it conveys.

Mothers play at BAR, 254 Crown St., New Haven, Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. Free. barnightclub.com and 203-495-1111.
