Sun Kil Moon, formed from the ashes of Red House Painters to provide a vehicle for the songs of vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Mark Kozelek, released its seventh studio album, “Universal Themes,” in June and has already announced the release of its next one, a collaboration with Jesu, in January.

Kozelek spurred controversy over the summer with some insensitive and sexist remarks he directed at a British journalist. In defending him, some have suggested that Kozelek’s songs remain introspective and empowering, with their lithe classical guitar-inspired melodies, poetic lyrics and raw emotional power.

Can we separate the music from the man? Mark Kozelek plays 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne space, 70 Sanford St., Fairfield. 203-259-1036, fairfieldtheatre.org
